New Orleans has faced a massive surge in homelessness since Hurricane Katrina. There is half the population in the city and yet twice the amount of homeless. The city and federal government has done little to aid the homeless, most of whom have never been without a house. Rent has increased 70 percent and shows no sign of abating, meanwhile FEMA is threatening to close down all trailer parks in August, and nothing is being done to rebuild low income housing to take their place. New Orleans has the food and housing costs of cities like New York and San Francisco with no economy to back it up and no services to help the poor.
