Deported men and women arriving on a US government chartered plane wait for processing in San Salvador. Many of the deportees left El Salvador when they were children and suffer severe culture shock when they return. Deported gang members usually link up with local affiliates becasue there family ties are weak. The international nature of the 18th street and MS-13 gangs, make it exceedingly difficult for authorities to control. And it is the social divisions and fractures caused by immigration that precisely push youth to start and join gangs.
