A painting by a member of 18th Street hangs in a house in San Salvador. Themes of clowns, muscled men, naked women, and skulls abound in the tattoos that adorns many Mara's bodies. These tattoos fundamentally separate gang members from society for the entire lives. Because the gang culture is so youth dominated the repercussions of the tattoos do not outweigh the gains in solidarity and commitment.
